The exhibit of the month for May 2023

Every month, visitors to our museum choose the exhibit they liked the most. The one that stood out for the month of May was the Demoiselle crane. The Demoiselle crane (Grus virgo) is the smallest and the most elegant type of crane. Its length can reach 85-100cm, its wingspan 155-180cm, and it weighs 2-3kg. It is found in central Eurasia and breeds on the steppes of southern Russia, Ukraine, and Eastern Siberia and in some areas in northwestern Africa. As a migratory species, it migrates to Africa and India in winter and can cross the eastern Mediterranean and the Himalayas. Although it is very rare to observe it in Greece, this year it was observed at Lake Dystou in Evia. Its estimated global population is 200.000-240.000 birds, but it is significantly declining mainly due to habitat destruction, hunting, or captivity in India and East Africa.
