The exhibit of the month for June 2023

Every month, visitors to our museum choose the exhibit they liked the most. The one that stood out for June was a heron, the Little Egret. The Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) is a species of medium-sized heron in the family Ardeidae. Its breeding distribution is in wetlands with very shallow water and feeds mainly on fish and amphibians. Little egrets are standing out with their black-blueish beak and white plumage, which during the breeding season the adult has two long plumes on the nape. In Europe, it is considered a primarily migratory species, while in Greece it nests from March to December in the north and central country. Although it is classified as a species of least concern, wetland degradation, habitat loss, and poaching for the trade of its feathers, are major threats to the species.
