Every month, visitors to our museum choose the exhibit they liked the most. The one that stood out for the month of August was Scarlet ibis.

Scarlet ibis (Eudocimus ruber) of the Threskiornithidae family, is the only wading bird with remarkably brilliant scarlet coloration. It is found in tropical South America and part of the Caribbean. A juvenile Scarlet ibis is a mix of grey and brown feathers and as it grows, a heavy diet of red crustaceans produces scarlet coloration. In the breeding season they live in flocks for up to 2000 birds. They are very strong at flying as during their migration they can easily achieve long-distance flights. With their distinctive long and thin bills, they can reach for food in soft mud or under plants.
