The exhibit of the month for January 2023

Every month, museum visitors choose the exhibit they liked the most. What they singled out for January was the silver fox. The silver fox is a melanistic form of the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and some are completely glossy black or with bluish-grey furs, giving them a silvery appearance. They mostly live in Northern America and Canada and in European countries, such as Russia, they were bred for their fur. Silver foxes were among the most valued fur-bearers, and their fur was frequently worn by nobles in Russia, Western Europe, and China. The silver fox is behaviorally similar to the red fox, for instance, they have in common the scent marking. This behavior is used as a display of dominance, but may also be used to communicate the absence of food from foraging areas.
