The exhibit of the month for May 2024

Every month, museum visitors choose the exhibit they liked the most. What they singled out for May was the Black Stork.
The Black Stork (Ciconia nigra) is a large migratory bird of the stork family Ciconiidae and is also found in Greece. Unlike the White-tailed Stork, it is more shy and, therefore nests away from inhabited areas. As the population size in Greece is very small (220-340 mature individuals), it is classified as Endangered (EN) according to the Red List of Threatened Species of Greece. Its size is slightly smaller than that of the white-tailed godwit, with a length and height of up to 90-100 cm. The upper part of its wing is black with green and purple metallic shades, while the lower part, mainly on the abdomen, is white. Their legs and beaks are characterized by a bright orange-red color. The main threat to the species is habitat loss, as well as deforestation, agricultural development, and pollution.
