Exhibit of the month - March 2022

Every month, museum visitors choose the exhibit they liked best. What made the visitors stand out for the month of March was the Eurasian pygmy owl (Glaucidium passerinum).
The Eurasian pygmy owl is the smallest species of owl in Europe and is also found in Greece. It is also found in Siberia, Scandinavia, Russia, China and the Balkans. In our country, it is found mainly in the forests of the Rhodopes and Central Greece. Its round head and frowning shape, give a sense of stringency to this bird!
Eurasian pygmy owls feed on small mammals, birds and insects. Their flirting period begins in the fall and can take, with breaks, until early spring. Females tend to choose the same male for their breeding, while males are the ones who will indicate the place where the nest will be. The Eurasian pygmy owl usually nests in tree holes and lays 4-7 eggs.
